To assist the development of the NSW Gas Decarbonisation Roadmap, SPR worked with RACE for 2030 and NSW DCCEEW to test how different policy choices would affect gas demand across homes, businesses, and industry (including SMIL process heat) through to 2050. Our analysis quantified a range of policies in isolation and in concert. This work built on the NSW built-environment energy use and emissions baseline SPR developed for the Department.
This project was delivered as a dynamic tool the client could run directly, with policies switched on and off, start years moved, and scenarios rebuilt and compared on each run across two AEMO scenarios. Every scenario reports gas demand, savings against the baseline, emissions, additional electricity demand from fuel switching, the impact on peak demand, as well as appliance count and bio-methane outputs.
