The Royal Australian Institute of Architects commissioned SPR to scope what its National Architecture Awards submissions can show about the benefits of good design. SPR built a consolidated and consistent dataset from eight seasons of entries, 6,090 across 2019 to 2026. Scripts handled everything that could be reduced to a rule, and an AI language model read the three million words of free text, quoting the passage each extracted figure came from. The method was packaged so the Institute can re-run it on future seasons. The extracted data was compared against sector baselines, including the Commercial Building Baseline Study and SPR's residential energy and embodied carbon models.
A final report outlining the methodology and findings, along with an interactive results dashboard, were also produced as part of this project.
